Pets with Allergies

Seasonal and food allergies are a very common diagnosis in our human population and also account for a large number of pet visits to the veterinarian.  Just as in humans, airborne allergy and food allergies are also common in dogs and cats. Common airborne allergens are pollens, dander, grasses, trees, and fabrics.  The most common food offenders are beef, dairy products, chicken, lamb, fish, chicken eggs, corn, wheat, and soy.  As knowledge of allergies are increasing there are many therapies that can ease the discomfort of pets.

Seasonal and Air-Borne Allergies

There are a variety of treatments available to alleviate allergy discomfort.  These treatments often include: topical treatments such as bathing, diet supplements and oral medications.  The one treatment possible of curing allergies is Immunotherapy.  This type of therapy requires frequent injections of a special individually-made serum which is created using small amounts of allergens (proteins against which the pet reacts). Food Allergies and Intolerances

 Determining the cause of a pet's allergy can be difficult and time intensive.  Food allergies can often be the most difficult to figure out.  A strict hypoallergenic food trial is required to determine the specific food causing the allergy.  However, once these foods have been identified often a change of the diet can alleviate all symptoms.   Read More 1  2  3
